Personal and people development

Developing people – yourself and others – is very much a part of health care in both the NHS and the independent sector. It’s recognised that effective health care organisations are staffed by people who are properly supervised and advised and who have access to ongoing education and training to make sure their knowledge and skills are up to date.

It may be that you don’t have responsibility for developing other people in your current post, but this is something you may well have an opportunity to take part in at some stage in your working life. Learning about it now will stand you in good stead for the future.

This section of the resource looks at the benefits of taking time to discuss how we’re getting on with our managers (widely known as ‘performance appraisal’), personal development planning, ongoing training and education (called lifelong learning), and reflection, a process through which we can consider issues in our practice and make decisions on how we might change in future.
