Learning and development opportunities

There are lots of different learning opportunities available in health care – formal classroom teaching, practical demonstrations and online and distance learning programmes, for example. But developing your new knowledge and skills need not necessarily involve taking a formal education course. You can, for instance:

  • learn from your patients/clients by asking how they feel they benefit (or do not benefit) from the care you and the team give them
  • speak to your manager about arranging to work closely for a while with an experienced colleague who can help you develop your practice in a specific area
  • read professional journals and books – RCN members are able to access the ‘British Journal of Healthcare Assistants’ and a wide range of books from the RCN libraries in all four UK countries
  • Access online development through, for example, the RCN Professional Development website.
